So you fell in love with a rescue pei, filled out an application, passed a
home visit, and signed an adoption contract.  The honeymoon is over, now the  real work begins!  To ensure a long and happy life together, please follow these   basic guidelines for new dog guardians.

 First, please realize that change is hard for everyone, and that includes
your new rescue pei. Rescue dogs need time to adjust to their new
environment and learn what is expected of them.  Adopters need to remember that  their new family member has just been through a traumatic life experience and  may still be sad or stressed.  They may still be grieving the loss of their  family, the trauma of a kill shelter, or the confusion or upheaval after leaving  boarding or a foster home. Know that with love, patience and understanding, a  successful transition will likely occur within a month.

Miss Sally is enjoying the morning rays in her new furever home.  This is what rescue is all about.  Save a Pei from death row, foster them,  get them vetted, love them, then find wonderful loving homes for them.   Imagine the relief Sally  now feels .  She can now relax and put those bad jail memories behind her.

DOMESTIC POISONS

Here is a list of common household and garden items that may be dangerous/damaging to your dog, cat or other animals. It cannot be an exhausti...ve list.

There is usually an ecological or organic alternative, whatever task you have in mind in house or garden.

Of course, the same cautions should apply to toddlers.

This list does not include toxic plants and toxic foodstuffs.

Cushing’s disease can take you by surprise and take your pets life suddenly, right before your eyes.

Why do they call this disease a silent killer?  The symptoms mimic the same symptoms of aging in an elder dog.  Slowing down, exercise intolerance, arthritis, weight gain, incontinence, more frequent urinating, etc.  Is this something your elder pet maybe displaying? Or even a young pet.  The disease does not discriminate by age.   A routine test, by your vet, can determine if this is due to Cushing’s disease or just the ailments of getting older.  Cushing’s disease can be controlled with medication, if diagnosed early on.  And your best friend can live a happy, healthy long life. But once Cushing’s is in full bloom and past the point of no return, it is too late.

Newman was a rescue Pei, which stole his family’s heart and found his forever home 5 years ago.  He was approximately 4 years old at that time.   One day in October of 2012, he started vomiting.   Within 1 hour he had vomited 7 times.  He was brought to the vet immediately after that hour, test run, blood work done, more tests.  The end result :   3 days later he passed over the rainbow bridge.  His diagnosis was Cushing’s disease, the silent killer.  When  research was done, by his fmaily, on  this mysterious disease, it was  realized how many symptoms Newman displayed over an 8 month period of time, that, if detected earlier on, he would probably still be here, happy and healthy today and on the proper medication to control the disease.  With the proper medication, this disease can be controlled.  Not cured, but controlled.

Take time to read the websites listed below.  Knowledge is power:  Spread the word.  If your beloved Pet is showing the signs indicated in theses websites, then please, bring them to the vet and have the Cushing’s disease test run.  It could potentially save your pets life and add many more years to it.

Shar-Pei Dogs can make good pets in Florida if they match your IifestyIe. The Shar-Pei is an adorable medium sized, wrinkled dog. Shar-Peis are intelligent, dominant dogs. This breed needs early, consistent training from a master that exudes leadership. Shar-Peis can be socialized to get along with children and other pets. Shar-Peis are extremely easy to housebreak. A Shar-Pei needs to be protected from extreme heat and can live in an apartment with enough exercise.
